PROFESSIONAL
I went to Stephens College (a women's college) in Columbia, Missouri.  It was really a finishing school that was still trying to cling to its traditions in 1968 when every tradition was beginning to unravel under constant change and revolution.

Then I transferred to Trinity University in San Antonio where I majored in English.  There was no curfew at Trinity, so we all had a pretty lively social life in town late at night.  I graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Trinity in 1972.

For the next eight years, I worked in various health insurance companies, unhappy with the regimentation with which women in the work force were expected to comply.  I worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas, Southland Life Insurance Co., and John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co.

In 1980, I entered graduate school at the Texas Woman's University and received a Master's degree and the Doctor of Philosophy in English.  In the summer of 1981, I attended Trinity College, Dublin (Institute for Irish Studies), where I met other scholars in my field around the world.  I had great fun traveling around the Emerald Isle for three months.

Actually, I stay pretty busy at quite a few projects.  I am a full-time tenured English professor at Northwestern Oklahoma State University and design web sites in my spare time for people who want them.  I also act as webmaster for several sites I have built for academic and community organizations.

PERSONAL

I am Anglo-Irish, which makes me a bit unpredictable.  I can be conservative one minute and fiercely subversive the next.  It all depends upon the topic of discussion.  Morris was my mother's maiden name (O'Morrissey).  Her family came from County Galway in Ireland and settled in Tennessee.  After the Civil War, they packed up and moved to Texas where I was born a few generations later.

I love spending time in bed reading a book on cold winter nights, with a cup of coffee and a cigarette.  Or I curl up in a chair with a blanket wrapped around me and watch historical films or film adaptations of English novels.  I like the challenge of writing conference papers and articles for publication.  I enjoy preparing great dinners for myself or giving dinner parties for guests--desserts included (I make a KILLER flan that beats most any restaurant in Mexico).  I am partial to red wine, especially Chianti.  Long walks in the evening sooth me and take away the tension from a busy day with students.  On occasion I visit the swimming pool to put in a few laps--good for the cardio-vascular system.  And, of course, I love my computer where I spend alot of time creating custom graphics, chatting with friends on Yahoo Messenger, and cruising the Net for the newest "cool" site or the latest downloadable program.

I dislike discourteous behavior anywhere from anyone.  I suppose the Age of Chivalry is gone.  Misbehaving children (or adults) are particularly annoying to me; they are so capable of learning and practicing good manners.  I like most foods except the "Three O's":  okra, oatmeal, and oysters--too slimey!  I am most especially opposed to narrow minds, dishonesty, game-playing, racism, bigotry, homophobia, fundamentalist religiosity, anti-intellectualism, ignorance of cultural diversity, and blind devotion to patriotism.  I do support social justice, truth, respect, and acceptance.
